“Look after the root of the tree, and the fragrant flower and luscious fruits will grow by themselves. Look after the health of the body, and the fragrance of the mind and richness of the spirit will follow.” — BKS Iyengar
Have you ever watched the show, Chef’s Table? I typically make time to watch one episode of one show each week, and this is the one I’ve been choosing lately. Each episode features and tells the story of a very successful (usually Michelin star rated) chef. Some I find more interesting than others, but almost all of them have this same basic formula:
- Person takes an interest in the culinary arts and begins cooking. Sometimes it is a long-standing dream, but often they seemingly stumble into that environment somehow.
- Discover they have a passion here and pour themselves into it.
- Study, learn, work, train with the best, work really hard, develop lots of skill.
- Spend a period of time emulating their master, imitating that which they learned.
- Feel miserable, unfulfilled, burnt out, disconnected, lose all passion, and fall out of love.
- Walk away from it all, give everything up.
- Feel a sense of loss, confusion, even despair.
- In this state of groundlessness, find their way back to their roots.
- Experience instant relief.
- Begin creating from that place, deeply connected to their Truth.
- Gain momentum and are unstoppable.
- Begin finding and uncovering their unique voice.
- Feel more joy and fulfillment than ever before.
We may not all be chefs, but I believe every person has creative impulse. It is part of our humanness — we are all creating, offering, expressing in some way who we are in the present moment.
So, what are your deepest, truest roots? Where’s home? When we connect and align there, rooting in that foundation, we can launch, we can soar.
“It was when I stopped searching for home within others and I lifted the foundations of home within myself I found there were no roots more intimate than those between a mind and body that have decided to be whole.” — Rupi Kaur
