Giving Thanks for the Human Experience

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and what’s resonating with me more this year than ever before is how blessed we are and what a miracle it is that we are here having this full human experience. I mean all of it — the light and dark, the ease and discomfort, the clarity and confusion, the joys and sorrows.

We practice yoga in order to grow our container and awaken our consciousness to hold and feel it all. With that expansive awareness, our gratitude for this unique and amazing life grows and grows.

Meister Eckhart said, “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough,” and B.K.S. Iyengar said, “My body is a temple, and the asanas are my prayers.” So let your yoga asana practice and your everyday movements be an expression of your gratitude. Embody your prayer of gratitude and allow that to move you.

Your breath is a wonderful place to begin as it is a through line connecting the mental, physical, and spiritual. Breathe in the entirety of the present moment, noting the divinity within it, and breathe out gratitude.

“Walk as if you are kissing the earth with your feet.” — Thich Nhat Hanh

Giving thanks with every cell of my being today, tomorrow, and every day.
