Curious Can-Openers

“What I want is to open up. I want to know what’s inside me. I want everybody to open up. I’m like an imbecile with a can opener in his hand, wondering where to begin… to open up the earth. I know that underneath the mess everything is marvelous. I’m sure of it.” — Henry Miller

Even when the world around you seems to be chaotic, your mind is filled with clutter, or you are experiencing turmoil in your life, I know that underneath the mess everything is marvelous.

Let’s all be can-opener-wielding imbeciles and do our part both for ourselves and the world around us to shift our personal and universal consciousness by peeling back and opening up to that marvelous whatever it is (God, Divine Spirit, Source, Universal Energy, Love… whatever you call it) which unites and permeates all beings. Let’s open to that and allow it to radiate within and then through us. This can feel like a big undertaking, but we begin as we always do — at home, with ourselves.

“The only reason we don’t open our hearts and minds to other people is that they trigger confusion in us that we don’t feel brave enough or sane enough to deal with. To the degree that we look clearly and compassionately at ourselves, we feel confident and fearless about looking into someone else’s eyes.” — Pema Chödrön

In meditation, including yoga asana, we practice complete presence and tap into our bottomless well of courage and compassionate heart so that we may see clearly and stay with ourselves just exactly as we are. We practice this first with ourselves so that then we may extend this clarity and loving-kindness to others.

You can begin right here and now in this very breath. With each inhale we drop in further, deepening our connection with, or rather growing our awareness of the existing depth of connection with the Source. With each exhale we let anything and everything that is not our truest Self fall away.

This journey is one of uncovering and remembering.
