Creativity

We are creative beings. Living as a human is a creative process, a perpetual creative expression.

Consider this: The first chakra is the Root Chakra, and it’s all about safety and trust. We need this basic foundation of security before we can even begin to aspire to any higher, enlightened form of existence. The second chakra is the Sacral Chakra, and it’s about creativity. I find it fascinating (and no accident) that immediately after the basic foundation of and human need for security comes creativity.

We are all constantly receiving and giving — putting out into the world all the time. There is no way around this, and so we ought to awaken to it, being mindful of and responsible for what we are creating.

This is all another way of saying that you matter, tremendously. What you do matters. You are part of the whole, and we seriously need you and what you uniquely have to give.

Wherever you are, you might take a moment now to close your eyes and attune to your breath. With each inhalation comes inspiration. In fact, the word, inspire, means: “to breathe in air; to inhale.” It also means: “to fill with the urge or ability to do or feel something, especially to do something creative; to create; give rise to.”

On average, we take between 17,280 and 23,040 breaths per day. That’s literally tens of thousands of occurrences of inspiration encountered by each of us every single day. Now, you can take this bit of information and say, “See, I am a piece of shit — I have all these moments of potential given to me, and I still can’t make/do/become _____ (fill in the blank with whatever that ‘something worthwhile’ is for you).” Or you can say to yourself, “Well, I’m alive, breath is moving through me, and so… oh my god… I must already be creative, creating, inspired, and inspiring.”

From there we open to seeing all the ways we’re already creating on a daily basis. We can make a promise to ourselves to keep breathing, and then continue to find ways to open to this constant flow of possibility, creative energy, and life force.

Creativity is more about clearing, opening, allowing, and becoming a clear channel and conduit for that which is begging to be expressed, created, and shared than it is a conjuring or muscling action. This isn’t to say creating is effortless or that it doesn’t require work. In fact, creating something meaningful usually requires lots of work, but there is breath around it and a sense of surrender.

So, please, just keep breathing.
